Mindsets: US vs. The World...

Is the world cracking up or is this just normal? Without making light of the danger and suffering in Japan, I feel the need to report my observations (or is it paranoia?).

Have a look at these two images from the online edition of the NYTimes. The top image is from the US edition and the bottom image is from the global edition. These screen caps were taken a couple seconds apart. What do you notice? (Besides the fact that we get Vegas and the world gets Gucci)

Do us United Statesans need fear words in our headlines (failure, crisis, etc.)? Are we that programmed for doom?

Hang on...

There are a few things going on, the one I notice the most is the nyt web editors will tweak headlines over the course of a day or two to raise or lower the "tone". I assume this is related to SEO but must also have something to do with reader analytics.

More to your point I think the message is that wasps take more hyperbole to rile sufficiently.

what's the timestamp of the screencaps?

the US edition says last updated 4:00pm, the global edition says 4:12pm.

if the screencap was taken at 4:15, then perhaps it's what the previous anonymous said re: SEO &/or user analytics, and maybe the US version was updated shortly thereafter.

if the screencap was taken later, say after 5 or 6pm, well, that's a bit more telling.
