“Those dusky Afro-Scandinavian buttocks, which combine the callipygian rondure observed among the races of the Dark Continent with the taut and noble musculature of sturdy Olaf, our blond Northern cousin”

Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon

It's rare to see or hear the greek for comely hinderparts, and less so the "steatopygic," which was also often applied to a particular "race" from Africa - the Hottentots. Also, did you know that Africa is an old Celtic girl's name, pre-dating their awareness of The Dark Continent. It means "agreeable."
What I did not know, what took me my entire life to learn, was that Thomas Pynchon was born in Glen Cove in 1972, and went to Oyster Bay High School (per Wikipedia). Jeez, if Salinas can build a Steinbeck Center, why is this fact so locally unknown? Similarly I know people in Rochester, NY who are just now learning about Nicholson Baker.
Sorry, he was born in 1937!
